America and no cars, can you believe that ? Yes this is true, There is one place in the United States where cars have been banned since 1898. Cars are common in almost every city but when it comes to Mackinac Island, the case is different. Without cars, how will you travel from one place to another ? There are some other arrangements though but if want your car to be in this city, that will be illegal. The place is located just offshore of mainland Michigan, in Lake Huron.
The result can be seen easily, there's no pollution, The air is cleaner and injuries are fewer. Mackinac is home to the nation's only carless highway, the M-185, offering easy access to its 8.3 miles of coastline, uncluttered by parking lots or gas stations. People who visit here say that it's like going back in time to a bygone era. The island covers 3.8 square miles (9.8 km square) in land area.
The entire island is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It is well known for its numerous cultural events. Because of its strange decision the island has become a popular tourist attraction. Some people say that the rule should be changed, according to them they want to see cars roaming around Mackinac's roads. But do you think it will ever become a reality ?
